UK Road Signs

Sources and licences

Every sign page on this site is written in our own words and checked against official UK sources. This page explains what those sources are, where the sign images come from, and how they are licensed.

Where our information comes from

We use official publications from the UK Government. Each sign page lists the exact page or rule we checked, and the date it was last reviewed.

  • Traffic sign images, Department for Transport (Image set based on the 2002 regulations (TSRGD 2002). Published 2013, last updated January 2018.). Official DfT image set of more than 600 traffic signs from Know Your Traffic Signs, in JPG and EPS formats. Images may be reproduced free of charge if they are reproduced accurately and not in a misleading context, with a statement that they are Crown copyright.
  • Know Your Traffic Signs, Department for Transport (Sixth edition, 2023). The Department for Transport's official guide to traffic signs, road markings and signals in England, Scotland and Wales. Published as a companion to The Highway Code.
  • The Highway Code, Department for Transport and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. The rules of the road for England, Scotland and Wales. Rules that use MUST or MUST NOT are legal requirements.
  • The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016, UK Government (legislation.gov.uk). The regulations that prescribe the design and meaning of traffic signs in Great Britain, including their diagram numbers.
  • Penalty points (endorsements): endorsement codes and penalty points, GOV.UK. The endorsement codes and penalty points for driving offences, including failing to comply with traffic signs and speeding.
  • Speeding penalties, GOV.UK. The minimum penalty for speeding, speed awareness courses, and how court fines are worked out.
  • Statutory guidance on civil enforcement of bus lane and moving traffic contraventions (outside London), Department for Transport (Updated 21 October 2022). How councils in England outside London can be designated to enforce moving traffic contraventions, such as no entry and banned turns, with penalty charge notices based on camera evidence.

These sources cover England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has its own regulations, so some rules may differ there.

Where the sign images come from

All sign images are from the Department for Transport's official traffic sign images. The Department allows these images to be reproduced free of charge, as long as they are reproduced accurately and not in a misleading context, with a statement that they are Crown copyright.

Sign images: © Crown copyright. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

We don't redraw or restyle signs. We convert the Department's original vector files (EPS) to SVG so they stay sharp on every screen, without changing the artwork. Each converted image is then checked pixel by pixel against the Department's own JPG version of the same sign before it is used.

The Department's image set is based on the 2002 sign regulations. Where a sign's design has changed since, we check it against the current regulations before publishing.

Our content

Explanations, common mistakes and other text on this site are our own. We don't copy text from other websites or apps. Where we state a rule, we cite the official source so you can check it.

Before a sign page is published, it is checked against its sources, and its artwork against the Department's original, then reviewed and approved by Bikash Thapa, a full UK driving licence holder.

This site is a learning aid, not legal advice. For the full rules, see The Highway Code.
